  In this webinar, Alexander Wiedenmann (Ulm University) gives a practical introduction to the data landscape for digital assets. He covers where blockchain data comes from, what different providers deliver and why a metric is only as reliable as the decisions behind it. Three examples show how this plays out with real data:

  • Metaprotocols such as Ordinals and Runes have reshaped Bitcoin's network dynamics, and overlooking them can lead to wrong conclusions.
  • Hashprice, a key revenue metric for Bitcoin miners, can largely be reconstructed from public blockchain data, which helps explain why it surged on the day of the 2024 halving despite the cut in the block subsidy. 
  • Trading volume depends not only on where you look but also on how you count: centralised exchanges often report volumes that cannot be independently reconstructed, while on-chain data from decentralised exchanges provides transaction-level visibility but can still produce very different totals depending on the methodology used.
