    Session A-3 (English): Sequential Investments and Terminal Value in DCF Models: When and why we need a convergence Period
    • DCF models split free cash flow projections usually into two sections: detailed planning phase and terminal value assuming the firm being in a steady state
    • The steady state in terminal value calculation is characterized by the special assumption of “value neutral growth” as the firm is to “earn its cost of capital”
    • We argue for introducing an intermediate period modelling the convergence and transition into the “value neutral” steady state
    • There may be significant valuation errors when ignoring the convergence and stepping directly into the terminal value phase
    • Simple models “fading” growth rates are prone to significant valuation errors

    • Following that, we will also show how to reconcile your Market Approach valuation with your DCF, i.e., we will show that DCF and valuation multiples are just two sides of the same coin.

      Opening Keynote: AI for Valuation Professionals

      AI is fundamentally changing how knowledge work gets done, and valuation is no exception. In this keynote, Christoph Magnussen shows what generative AI can already do today, where it is heading, and what this means for valuation professionals in their daily practice. Instead of theory, he brings hands-on examples and demonstrates how to move from experimenting with tools to systematically integrating AI into professional workflows.

      • Where generative AI stands today and what the next wave of AI agents means for knowledge-intensive professions
      • Concrete use cases: how AI can support research, analysis, and report drafting in valuation practice
      • From tool tourist to power user: how professionals build real AI competence
      • What remains distinctly human: judgment, responsibility, and client trust in an AI-driven world
      • Practical first steps to bring AI into daily work, starting today

      This keynote session will be held in English language.

      B-3 (EN): Application of Machine Learning Models in Relative Valuation – A Fundamental Approach

      Relative valuation is among the most widely applied methods in valuation practice. However, traditional approaches based on industry averages or peer group medians exhibit significant conceptual weaknesses: the selection of comparable companies is often subjective, industry classifications remain coarse, and fundamental differences between firms are insufficiently captured. The econometric approaches developed in the literature, typically based on regression analyses, systematically incorporate fundamental factors and improve predictive accuracy, but reach methodological limits due to their underlying assumption of linearity.

      A new generation of machine learning techniques – in particular tree-based approaches such as gradient boosting – has demonstrated substantially higher predictive accuracy in academic research. The study by Geertsema and Lu (2023) provides the first systematic evidence of this superiority on a broad empirical basis. In their published form, however, these models are only of limited applicability in valuation practice: they rely on a large number of input variables that are typically unavailable in real-world valuation settings, and their implementation requires considerable technical expertise.

      This presentation addresses this gap and offers preliminary insights into how these promising machine learning models can be adapted such that they become genuinely applicable under the conditions of valuation practice while preserving predictive accuracy superior to that of conventional approaches.

      C-3 (EN): Avoiding Common Mistakes in Discounted Cash Flow Valuation

      Discounted Cash Flow is still the workhorse in valuation, but do you manage to avoid all the pitfalls in applying this popular methodology?

      In this interactive session, Dennis Jullens will discuss among others the below issues:

      • Common mistakes in DCF valuation and how to avoid them;
      • Omitting or double counting cash flows - leasing and share based compensation;
      • Inconsistent treatment of items as operating, investing and financing;
      • Long-term investment does not match long term growth;
      • Incorrect choices in cost of capital – beta, equity risk premium and cost of debt;
      • Choosing simple multiples for a terminal value;
      • Using an incomplete enterprise to equity bridge.

      Keynote (Live Stream with Live Q&A): Beat Your Bot – Investing in the Age of AI and How It Will Affect the Valuation Community
      • In this session, I will talk about the threat that AI poses to much of the bread-and-butter mechanics of finance, whether it be in investment banking, private equity, or consulting.
      • I will use my experiences in dealing with bots that have been built specifically around my material, starting with bots that I have approved and given access to, and moving on to darker versions that are designed for scams.
      • I will generalize the discussion by talking about what AI will be able to do well (thus displacing humans) and what we will need to do to stay ahead of that threat, again speaking from a personal standpoint.
      • During the process, we will talk about corporate finance and valuation.

      Keynote: Competitiveness in a Fragmented World: Investment, Productivity, and Growth in Germany and Europe

      Germany’s and Europe’s competitiveness is coming under increasing pressure in an increasingly fragmented global order. The German economy remains stuck in crisis: business expectations among German companies have recently deteriorated again, and investment plans are being viewed with increasing skepticism.

      At the same time, megatrends such as decarbonization, digitalization, and demographic change require substantial adjustments, which are further complicated by structural weaknesses. Against this backdrop, the central question arises: How can Europe strengthen investment, raise productivity, and ensure sustainable economic growth?

        • The reasoning behind the estimation of the MRP provided in publicly available valuation reports is often vague and cryptic; the presentation aims to serve as a practitioner’s guide to estimating implied market risk premia in a simple way, backed by a solid theoretical fundament and scientific evidence
        • The interactions between market risk premia and the valuation of a target company are discussed, with emphasis on the IDW S 1 and assumptions for long-term value drivers
        • Long-term growth is discussed in more detail, as it is the most controversial input parameter (focal points: circularity problems, uncertainty and growth as a result of other value drivers)
